A guiding principle in the artist’s oeuvre crystallized in the early 1960s with the “Bridged Continents” series. Behind this is a dualistic principle of static, self-contained and dynamic surfaces.

Max Ackermann noted in his diary on June 23, 1961: “Two polar opposites continue to excite me. One is my painting type “Bridged Continents” and the second is the theme “To Joy”. It was the same 10 years ago. But the two themes were closer together then. Today (1961) “Bridged Continents” is simple, monumental, powerful.”

In the “Bridged Continents” series, large, converging areas of color prevail, some of which approach each other without touching, some of which overlap or even completely overlap. In some cases, the view opens up onto structures behind them, creating not only overlaps but also breakthroughs. The result is a self-contained color-form structure that exhibits both tendencies of concentration on a core and expansion into unlimited space.
