Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse, one of the most important artists of modernism, created an impressive work with the drypoint etching “La Pleureuse”, which is characterised by its emotional intensity and technical mastery. The etching shows a woman immersed in deep emotion, her face buried in her hands. Matisse used the drypoint technique to create fine, delicate lines that emphasise the fragility and vulnerability of the figure.

As one of his first prints, “La Pleureuse” (The Weeper) thematises pain and melancholy, whereby Matisse knows how to achieve a strong emotional effect through minimalist means. Reduction to the essentials and the expression of inner feelings are characteristic of Matisse’s graphic works. This work shows how Matisse, known for his luminous paintings, was also able to express a profound sensitivity for the human condition in black and white.
