Art Weekend Nuremberg: Helge Leiberg – „Stop Motion“ at Bode Galerie
On the occasion of Art Weekend Nuremberg, Bode Galerie Nuremberg presents the solo exhibition “Stop Motion” featuring works by Helge Leiberg. The exhibition focuses on an artistic position that has explored the human figure, movement and the dynamic relationship between body and space for decades.
Born in Dresden in 1954, Helge Leiberg studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Gerhard Kettner from 1973 to 1978. Alongside painting, he developed an early and profound interest in free jazz, contemporary music, film and dance. In 1979, together with Michael Freudenberg and A. R. Penck, he founded a painters’ band dedicated to free music. This interplay between different forms of artistic expression continues to shape his work today.
At the heart of Leiberg’s oeuvre is the human body in motion. His figures dance, leap, encounter one another or appear to pause for a brief moment. Through rapid, gestural lines and a direct painterly language, Leiberg reduces the body to movement, posture and expression. His figures often approach the threshold of abstraction, taking on an almost sign-like quality.
The exhibition title “Stop Motion” reflects precisely this interplay between dynamism and stillness. Like individual frozen sequences, Leiberg’s figures appear as snapshots of movements that seem to continue beyond the confines of the individual work. Line, color and gesture create a rhythm that transforms the pictorial surface into a vibrant space of movement.
During Art Weekend Nuremberg, galleries and art venues across the city open their doors and invite visitors to discover the diversity of Nuremberg’s art scene. We are delighted to be part of this year’s program with “Helge Leiberg – Stop Motion”, a solo exhibition dedicated to the artist.
Our sincere thanks go to VON & VON for organizing Art Weekend Nuremberg and for their commitment to strengthening the visibility of Nuremberg’s art and gallery scene.
