Dietrich Klinge “Another”
The sculpture “Another” invites us to reflect on the formation of the self – not as something fixed or original, but as something that emerges in relation to others. The title suggests that we only come to know ourselves because “the other” exists: a counterpart, a mirror, a space of resonance.
It is in the encounter with another person that our own identity becomes visible. Their reactions, their gaze, their otherness compel us to locate ourselves. We become aware of our boundaries and potentials, our feelings and attitudes, only when they are reflected or challenged by the other.
Thus, the sculpture points not only to a singular object, but to a relationship – to the dialogical principle of human existence. The “other” is not just another person, but also a moment of recognition: in their mirror, we see ourselves, though never completely, never definitively. Identity remains a fluid process, shaped by difference.
The title “Another” is therefore not merely a label, but an invitation: to encounter ourselves through what is foreign, to reflect on the self within the “we” – and on the “we” in the mirror of otherness.
