Under the title “South of Oslo,” Stadtgalerie Alte Post in Westerland on Sylt presents an exhibition featuring works by artist Silke Mathé. The exhibition at Stephanstraße 4 is presented in cooperation with Kunsthandel Felix Jud.
Silke Mathé lives and works in Oslo. Yet her painting repeatedly draws her further south – particularly to Sylt and Amrum. With their expansive landscapes, distinctive coastal light, and ever-changing skies and sea, the North Frisian islands are important sources of inspiration for her artistic practice.
At the heart of Mathé’s painting is the pursuit of visual truth. Rather than simply reproducing what she sees, she approaches her subjects through reflections of light, colour, and atmospheric shifts. Light becomes a defining element of her work: it makes colours glow, transforms surfaces, and lends landscapes and fleeting moments their distinctive atmosphere.
On Sylt and Amrum in particular, the artist encounters a remarkable variety of these impressions. The changing light of the North Sea, reflections on the water, and the colours of the islands’ natural landscapes become the starting point for paintings that bring together perception and atmosphere.
