The artwork “Das Runde muss ins Eckige” (translates to “The circle has to go inside the square”) is portraying the artist himself. Peter Angermann chose the bear to represent himself in his artworks, without having the need to portray himself realistically. The motif shows the artist joyfully working on one of his plein air (open air) pictures and thinking about a way to start. The thoughts are represented in a typical cartoonish thought-bubble, which outcome is supposed to be made into reality on the square canvas. The title refers to a German saying, which is derived from sport/football culture. The seemingly simplicity of a round ball, which has to be placed inside the square goal is compared with the act of painting. It seems easy from the outside, but achieving something meaningful is way harder.
