Landschaft - Ernst Weil
The 1955 painting Landscape belongs to a central phase in Ernst Weil’s oeuvre, during which his characteristic “Cubist-tectonic” approach to landscape became fully developed. The visible natural environment remains the point of departure, but is transformed into an autonomous structure of colour, plane, and geometric form. The work is therefore exemplary of Weil’s artistic position in the mid-1950s – situated between the legacy of classical modernism and the new forms of abstract painting emerging in post-war Germany. At the same time, it represents the constructive phase immediately preceding his move to Paris in 1957 and the subsequent shift towards a freer, more gestural mode of painting.
