Intermezzo – Dietrich Klinge and Ulrich Brauchle

In the exhibition Intermezzo at Kunstraum Portus, the works of Ulrich Brauchle and Dietrich Klinge come together, bringing into dialogue two artistic positions that share a closely related fundamental approach.

Both artists share an understanding of art that is defined not by stylistic conventions or contemporary classifications, but by a conscious engagement with a broader art-historical context. Their works see themselves as part of an ongoing development—as contributions to an established tradition that is continually reconsidered and carried forward.

The exhibition brings different media into dialogue: Brauchle’s drawings and paintings encounter Klinge’s sculptures. Brauchle works between figurative drawing and abstract painting, allowing forms to evolve through a process and often remain in open, unresolved states. Klinge’s figures emerge from the fragment and appear as concentrated expressions of corporeality. Never entirely self-contained, they retain traces of ruptures, omissions, and transitions.

Complemented by art-historical elements, the exhibition creates a multilayered context in which the works do not stand in isolation, but instead refer to one another and beyond themselves. The title Intermezzo reflects this deliberately conceived state of transition: a temporary interruption that allows the space to be experienced anew while drawing attention to transitions and continuities.

What unfolds is not a self-contained exhibition narrative, but rather a moment of pause—a convergence of different periods, materials, and forms of artistic expression through which the idea of timelessness becomes tangible.
