Peter Angermann at the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main

In the current permanent exhibition of contemporary art, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt is showing the work “Pätterndorf” from 1980. The painting on textile is exhibited in room 12 under the theme “The 80s – Painting after the End of Painting”.

As a member of the Joseph Beuys class, Peter Angermann was part of the world of thought surrounding the expanded concept of art from 1968 to 1972. From 1969, Peter Angermann and the YIUP group, which he co-founded, attracted university attention through provocative actions and the resulting criticism of Joseph Beuys himself. From 1972, Peter Angermann finally turned away from the prevailing conceptual art and the teachings of Beuys and devoted himself to what seemed to be forgotten figurative art. In the 1980s, Angermann was part of the artists’ group “Normal”, which opposed the art market of the time and the prevailing art styles and reinterpreted traditional painting styles with a conscious anti-avant-garde approach. His works from this period are characterized by an ironic examination of political and social issues, which made him an important figure in postmodern art. Through his innovative visual language and his critical view of society, Angermann made a significant contribution to the art of the 1980s and beyond.

Peter Angermann’s art is characterized by a personal character, which is evident in his own experience of different stages of life and the artistic realization associated with them. When the artist worked as a professor at the Städelschule from 1996 to 2002, the painter’s focus shifted to the metropolis of Frankfurt. His studio and above all plein-air works show his life and surroundings at precisely that time.
