87 S 1G – Ava Gardner - Alain Clément

Alain Clément

Ava Gardner (1922-1990) was an American actress and one of the greatest film icons of the 20th century. Known for her stunning beauty and strong screen presence, she began her career at MGM in the 1940s and achieved international fame with films such as “The Killers” (1946) and “Mogambo” (1953), for which she received an Oscar nomination. Gardner was known for her glamorous lifestyle and turbulent marriages, including with Mickey Rooney and Frank Sinatra, as well as for her acting. Her life and work made her a timeless Hollywood legend.

A special graphic in Clément’s oeuvre is his portrait of Ava Gardner. In this work, he combines his characteristic abstraction with the depiction of the famous actress. Through reduced forms and a pared-down choice of colors, he captures Gardner’s charisma and presence without lapsing into figurative representation. This print demonstrates Clément’s ability to create a strong emotional resonance even in abstraction, expressing his pictorial themes around the aesthetics of form and ultimately the classical nude in a subtle yet engaging way.
