Bernd Zimmer’s print Namibian Dune III from 2004 is an impressive depiction of the colors and shapes of the desert landscape. The work is characterized by a vibrant colour palette that captures the visual power of the Namibian dune landscape in an abstract, almost expressionistic manner. Dominant yellow tones flood the composition, reminiscent of the scorching sun and the heat of the desert. This intense color is broken up by strong red horizon lines that suggest the shape of the dunes and lend structure to the composition. The blue, cloud-like shapes in the upper part of the graphic create an exciting contrast to the warm earth tones. They appear almost floating and lend the composition a dynamic balance between sky and earth. Zimmer’s technique emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow, whereby the print captivates with both its simplicity and its expressiveness. The two-dimensional use of color, combined with visible textures and overlays, conveys depth and movement. The apparent abstraction of the landscape nevertheless leads to an intense, sensual experience of the desert. Namibian Dune III is more than just a depiction of landscape – it is a homage to the infinite expanse and sublimity of nature. Zimmer succeeds in distilling the magic and stillness of the desert in bold colors and minimalist forms. The composition has a timeless effect and invites the viewer to perceive the beauty and originality of this landscape with a new, intense gaze.
