Alain Clément’s work on paper “17 A 12 A”, in which he works with strong contrasts of red and black, is an impressive example of his masterful control of colour and form. In this work, Clément uses the powerful interplay of colours to create an energetic composition. The bright red stands in stark contrast to the deep black, giving the shapes and lines on the paper a special tension and intensity.
The reduction to these two colours allows Clément to concentrate on the essentials of his abstract pictorial language: the relationship between surfaces, the movement in space and the balance between light and darkness. The artist links the figure with the surface and space in his very own way of expression. The rhythmic movement of the dance
is combined with the play of colours in the composition – a reminiscence of his great role model Henri Matisse, which at the same time leads to the beginning of a new form of expression.
